Essential oils for yoga

Mar 26, 2015 by

The first time I was ever tried essential oils was through a yogi friend. It was eucalyptus and the scent really took me to a new place as I inhaled and focused on the smell and forgot about what was wandering around in my mind. I love pairing essential oils with my yoga practice. Using essential oils in yoga can take your experience to a whole new level and give you a much richer experience, whether you are going for an energizing session or a restorative, calming session. Some people have a hard time calming their mind, even in yoga. When using essential oils during your yoga practice, depending on the oil you use, many different things can happen. Check out some of my recommendations:

To use: dab on pressure points (wrists, behind ears, base of skull, bottoms of feet) or diffuse into the air during your practice.

For an energizing practice:

Wild Orange: Energizing and uplifting. The oil of abundance. Dab on wrists right before your practice or diffuse.

Respiratory Blend, Peppermint or Cardamom: Helps you focus on breathing by opening your airways and providing respiratory support. Dab on chest or diffuse.

For a restorative, calming practice:

Calming Blend: softens the heart and promotes relaxation. Dab over heart and on pressure points or diffuse.

Cedarwood: Quiets the mind and promotes relaxation. Dab over heart and on pressure points or diffuse.

In addition:

Lemon: add a few drops to your water (in glass, not plastic) to promote a natural detox. And it tastes great!

Protective Blend: make a spritz of a few drops of Protective Blend in a small glass spray bottle and spritz down your mat just before or just after a session for added immune support and to chase away threats.

JR is Chasing 100 – and we want to be along for the ride!

Mar 4, 2015 by

John Ryan (JR), son Erich, and wife Bethany

Two of my favorite people in the world are John Ryan (JR) and Bethany Seaman. They hold a special place in my heart because Bethany was our beloved, skilled, amazingly valuable nanny as I was first learning to be a mom. She was an angelic voice in our worship band at City Church and she and JR were the youth leaders. We all grew together in faith and as parents. I always felt like I was better person around the Seamans. JR was also involved with me through endeavors with my magazine, The One Bride Guide, and his cinematography and wedding photography studioGranolaTech. When I heard he was doing Chasing 100, I wanted to be a part of it and thought if I couldn’t run by his side supporting him, I could at least support him with oils!

I’ll let JR tell you what his next adventure is about. We’ll be getting updates from JR along his journey so join me in praying for him and supporting him from wherever you are in the world.

Here’s JR’s story in his own words:

Chasing100LogoBlack_2Chasing 100 is my own personal brain child. It has been building up in my mind for a few years. It started as a dream back when I first got into running half marathons. Bethany and I were newlyweds and didn’t have any money whatsoever. I thought it would be awesome to get local businesses to sponsor me so I could get enough money to pay for shoes and entry fees. Unfortunately, life got in the way and I never got a sponsor for my races back then. That being said, the dream never died.

Fast forward a couple years to July 2014 and I was itching to do something new. I wanted to do something that would challenge myself mentally, physically, and even prove myself as an artist and filmmaker. We were on our way to Colorado for a family trip and I spent the hours driving listening to Scott Jurek’s book, Eat & Run. His story about being an ultra runner and hard core vegan fired me up! I was jazzed! I couldn’t stop thinking about it! I wanted to run a 100 mile race too. I wanted to run the Leadville 100 on 2015. The only problem was, I hadn’t run more than a half marathon. In fact, the last half marathon I ran was in 2012!  I wasn’t out of shape. I ate a health vegan diet and I had been running pretty constantly. Even though my running was consistent,  I was only running at max 4 miles at a time. I would have to do that 25 times over in order to run a 100 mile race! Who was I kidding? I would never be in shape to run Leadville in August of 2015. Even though it was a year away, it just didn’t seem possible. But then, the impossible happened. I went out for a run during our trip in Colorado. I ran on the road for a mile and then decided to go straight up the trail on the slopes of Beaver Creek. I hadn’t run like this in years! I wasn’t going fast but I felt free and I loved it. At one point I looked up to take in the beautiful scenery and a deer darted right past me! For a short moment if felt like we were running together. To me it was a sign that I was doing the right thing. Before I knew it, I had run at altitude and up a mountain for 4 miles! I turned around and went home for a run just over 8 miles. It was the most I had run at once in 2 whole years!

IMG_6209I told my wife that I wanted to run Leadville in 2015. Amazingly, she loved the idea! I told her I knew it had to be a documentary. A whole year following me as I go from half marathon finisher to Leadville 100 contestant. Most people would think I was crazy but I didn’t care. I wanted to be an ultra marathoner, I just I hadn’t even run a marathon yet! It felt like putting the cart before the horse but it also felt right. From that trip on, I knew I was going to be an ultra runner. I was going to run and finish the Leadville 100 on a vegan diet with only one year of training.

IMG_1867So how is it going? We are about 7 months in and I’m running like crazy! A lot has happened since then, my Friday morning is filled with a 20+ mile run, I literally turned 28 in the middle of the night on a snowy, icy, muddy trail while pacing a close friend at The Bandera 100k, I ran a 50k (31 miles) and officially became an ultra runner, I was asked to be on the Spectrum Trail Racing Team,  I’ve received a bunch of free gear, and got my first sponsor KeepItEssential.com! FIY, pacing is running with a friend during a long race so they don’t lose their mind, get lost or forget to eat and drink. So far, this has already been the best year of my life and it is only getting better!

John Ryan Seaman is an Austin based filmmaker, photographer, and business owner. He and his beautiful wife of 5 years have fostered 8 children under the age of 2 and been able to adopt one of those amazing kids. Together the three of them love running, watching movies, reading about health and wellness, and helping others learn to thrive spiritually, relationally, and physically. You can learn more about chasing 100 at www.chasing100.com or follow the project on Instagram and Facebook. Look for more updates from JR here on keepitessential.com

Why Essential Oils are Best Delivered through Network Marketing

Feb 18, 2015 by

I have many friends who love essential oils and believe in them, but the minute I start talking about the network marketing piece of the puzzle, their brains switch into a different mode. Walls go up, I see skeptical faces and I get questions asking about my favorite essential oil company being a “pyramid scheme” or “one of those companies where you have to have parties.”

*Why can’t I give you the name of my favorite essential oil company? The FDA won’t allow me to in the same space where I educate about essential oils. But they will allow you to find out who it is via email. Click here to find out more.

First of all, pyramid schemes are illegal. My favorite essential oil company is a natural solutions company that was founded because of a desperate need for integrity in the essential oil world, to inject some powerhouse scientists and doctors into the solution, and to deliver the highest quality essential oils right into our homes… EVERY home. The only way to bring all these missions together and truly create healers in every home was through a network marketing or multi-level marketing (MLM) model.

My favorite essential oil company’s need for on-the-ground teams is not satisfied through “parties” but via classes. The powerful nature of certified pure therapeutic grade (CPTG) essential oils translates to a serious need for education in the industry, both on how to use essential oils and how to avoid the fakes, which can be toxic and dangerous to sensitive people and children. Members provide consistent classes, so packed with information, new members keep attending after enrollment because they learn something new each time.

“But it’s just one more ‘thing’ I have to join.” – True. The various companies offering wholesale memberships are too many to count. “This one is different” has been heard before. The state of our healthcare system played a big role in determining why the network marketing model is vital for essential oils to make any kind of impact in the world. Essential oil education (to date) isn’t considered “main stream.” And although regarded by an increasing number of doctors to be a legitimate compliment to western medicine, formal essential oils classes are only just starting to be covered in our educational institutions. So where do you learn? The network.

A wholesale membership is required to gain access to the bulk of the information regarding protocols through real-life testimonials, but this limitation wasn’t created by my favorite essential oil company. The FDA has restrictions on what we can and can’t talk about in the public forum because essential oils are not categorized as medicine. A close, private network is the only way to stay on the government’s good side and continue to talk without camouflaging what we say to be compliant.

Robert Kiyosaki, best selling author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad recommends network marketing because of the residual income potential. But more importantly, he says the best network marketing companies focus on one thing over the product or the compensation plan: education. My favorite essential oil company excels at this. Some people may be put off by a company growing so fast and with such impact, but I say embrace it and hold on for the ride. My favorite essential oil company’s rise to success means that 4x as much money is being invested into research and education from last year. As a member, you are connected to this exciting wave of knowledge and are integral in communicating it to the users. This exchange = change and that excites me!

I challenge you to let down your guard and look at what is before you. Our healthcare system is broken. Our dependency on pharmaceuticals is out of control. Essential oils have always been around, but the industry has never had this kind of revolutionary momentum behind it. My favorite essential oil company has been a catalyst for this momentum. Education is the real reason for this momentum. When you connect with the network, you connect to the wealth of education and that’s certainly worth the $35 fee!

My favorite essential oil company’s network marketing system is brilliant, necessary, and I wouldn’t be using essential oils today without it. Thank God for friends with oils!

I will love, thank, seek, commit, communicate and show up

Jan 5, 2015 by

fulloutThis year, instead of stating specific resolutions, I thought I needed more of a pledge I could focus on throughout the year to keep me on track. Luckily, my whole family went along with the idea. Maybe it will benefit you too. I have a tendency to focus on the negative, so I will keep this around, on my fridge or bathroom mirror, so I can remind myself of how to stay focused on a positive, successful life! Good luck and be blessed in 2015!

2015 Life Pledge:

  1. I pledge to take responsibility for myself and for my family.
  2. I will love, protect, serve, and communicate with my family to the best of my ability.
  3. I will have love for myself and make self-care a priority.
  4. I will make every effort to nourish my body with good food, good sleep, good love and fresh air.
  5. I commit to consistent actions to achieve and maintain a healthy mind and body.
  6. I will seek the path of faith and love, striving to keep my focus on the positive blessings around me and the positive abundance on its way to me.
  7. In times of weakness, and when I lose focus, I will seek out God, my family, and my community for support and accept their counsel with an open heart and mind.
  8. I will communicate gratitude and live a life focused on thankfulness.
  9. I will treat others with kindness, respect and compassion.
  10. I will live my life in service to others so that my gifts and the abundance I enjoy will not be wasted.
  11. I will have a forgiving heart, forgive often, and ask for forgiveness from those I have wronged.
  12. I will communicate my desires and the steps I’m willing to take to reach my goals.
  13. I will show up, be consistent, start again when I get derailed, and live life full out.

5 Essential Solutions for a Crazy Holiday

Dec 23, 2014 by

5essentialholiday*Previously posted on My Oil Business Blog

Everyone knows the struggle we face this time of year. Lack of sleep, lack of money, and lack of patience has us all in a tizzy. Never fear! You’ve got essential oils to get you through it. We’ve got a list of our 5 favorite ways to stay happy, healthy and protect yourself from the crazies during this holiday rush:

grumpyshopper1. Grouch Spray – Carry a spray bottle on you at all times with this helpful blend. When a person confronts you with negativity (and should be added to Santa’s naughty list) just give a squirt into the air in the direction of the offender (if they get mad, say you passed gas). They’ll either change their mood or walk away – two acceptable options! In 2oz amber spray bottle mix 5 drops Lavender, 5 drops Sandalwood, 5 drops Wild Orange and top with distilled water. Shake well before each use.

2. Shop-A-Holic Boost – Feeling like you need just a couple more hours at the mall but can’t bear to think about it? Use your focus blend and roll along your spine and at the base of your skull. Apply before traveling to the mall. In the car (don’t oil and drive), drip some peppermint on a tissue and stuff in your air vent to get you energized and in the mood to shop till you drop!

3. Late Night Gift Wrapping/Toy Assembly Marathon Protocol – You better get ready! For energy, use in your diffuser: 3 drops Wild Orange plus 3 drops Peppermint. Make a tall glass bottle of water to have on hand keeping you hydrated and fresh with 8-10 drops of lemon per 16 oz of water. If you have lots of little parts to deal with, add some focus blend rolled on your feet or spine. And when you are finished, fried, and finally ready to hit the sack, dab some balancing blend on your wrists and temples with 1-2 drops of Clary Sage on your feet to help you sleep well and be ready for that early Christmas morning wakeup call.

4. Bills-Be-Gone (the stress and tension anyway) – You’ve marked the last gift off your list, now the reality of what you spent starts to set in. Yowzer! At the end of the day, apply balancing blend on your pressure points (temples, wrists, back of neck, feet, spine). Then run a hot bath. In one cup of Epsom salts, add 3 drops Lavender, 2 drops Roman Chamomile, 2 drops Marjoram, and 2 drops Helichrysum. Pour mix into bath and soak for 20-45 minutes. Cut this recipe in half for a foot soak.

5. Chocolate Makes Everything Better – To give yourself energy and a quick, pre-made pick-me-upper, make some Chocolate Almond Bars to have on hand for the whole family. Combine in food processor, 1 cup chocolate chips, 1 cup almonds, 1 cup pitted dates, ½ cup cranberries, 5 drops Wild Orange oil. Blend until it starts to clump. Pat into a shallow glass dish. Score into bars. Refrigerate for a few hours to set, then cut and put in an air-tight container. Store in fridge. Eat as needed!

Use those oils! Any time you feel emotionally charged, get your favorite essential oils out and apply. Good luck! We wish you a holiday that is oily, merry and bright!
