History
Clove oil has a vast history in the ancient world. It was brought to China from Indonesia, and became a staple in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Its many benefits were eventually used throughout Europe during the Middle Ages. Clove was one of the ingredients in Thieves’ oil, a mixture of essential oils that protected a group of thieves from getting the bubonic plague.
Oil Description
Clove oil is produced from the unopened flower buds of the evergreen tree, Eugenia caryophyllata. Originally found in Southeast Asia, this tree thrives in tropical environments. Its name is derived from the Latin word for nail, clavus, as its buds are similar in appearance to a nail. Clove is used in everything from gum to toothpaste.
Cautions
Use with a carrier for sensitive skin. Keep out of reach of children. Consult your physician if you are pregnant, nursing or under a doctor’s care. Do not put oils directly in your eyes (oils can drip into eyes – if this happens, flush with fractionated coconut oil, not water). Do not drip oils into the ear canal. Avoid sensitive areas.
