History

Melissa, or lemon balm, was used throughout medieval Europe to aid with various ailments such as earaches, toothaches, and stemming blood flow in wounds. Avicenna, an 11th century Persian physician, stated that the melissa herb “causeth the mind and heart to become merry.” He is regarded as being the first to implement melissa as a remedy for depression. Melissa was also favored during the Middle Ages for its many for its antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

Oil Description

Melissa’s sweet fragrance and therapeutic qualities are why it is among the most favored of all essential oils in regards to aromatherapy. Melissa consists of geranial and neral, which produces calming benefits.

Cautions

Use with a carrier for sensitive skin. Keep out of reach of children. Consult your physician if you are pregnant, nursing or under a doctor’s care. Do not put oils directly in your eyes (oils can drip into eyes – if this happens, flush with fractionated coconut oil, not water). Do not drip oils into the ear canal. Avoid sensitive areas.

Directions for Use

  • Create a soothing environment, by diffusing 3-5 drops of melissa oil. Blend with basil, geranium or rose oils for added effect.
  • Diffuse 3-5 drops of melissa before bedtime for a restful sleep. Include a few drops of lavender oil for added effect.
  • Rejuvenate skin by adding a drop of melissa oil to your daily moisturizer.
  • For clear and healthy skin, blend 5 drops of melissa oil with 1oz of coconut oil, and apply onto affected area as needed.
  • Help to stimulate the mind and beat brain fog: add 5 drops of melissa into a spray bottle with about 4-8 oz of water. Spritz onto face as needed.
  • For a healthy nervous system and to promote cellular health, tap a drop of melissa oil under tongue at the beginning of each day.
  • Maintain healthy cholesterol levels, by ingesting 2 drops of melissa daily. 
  • Promote a healthy immune response, by ingesting 2 drops daily.
  • Maintain healthy glucose levels by adding a few drops of melissa to water daily.
  • Studies have shown that diffusing melissa oil daily, aids with symptoms of dementia. Inhaling directly from bottle is also effective.
  • For emotional support, apply 1-2 drops to pressure points (temples, wrists, back of neck).
  • Overcome feelings of vertigo and dizziness: rub 1-2 drops of melissa oil to the back of neck or ears, or add a drop of melissa oil to water or tea.
  • Cold sores: dab a small amount of melissa oil onto affected area as needed, may need to dilute with coconut oil if you have very sensitive skin.
  • To help with hypertension: dilute 1 drop with carrier oil, and rub onto the chest or back of the neck, or ingest 1-2 drops with water.
  • For PMS or menopausal symptoms, add 1-2 drops into veggie capsule and ingest daily.
