History
Niaouli is commonly known as the paper bark tree or the punk tree. Some would say niaouli is similar to, but stronger than tea tree oil. In the US, the niaouli plant was introduced to Florida, specifically the Orlando area, in 1900. Florida brush fires caused the plant to grow vigorously, flowering in just weeks. The USDA has since classified this plant as a weed. Melaleuca quinquenervia trees can live to over 100 years old and can withstand droughts and floods. doTERRA’s niaouli is sourced in Madagascar.
Oil Description
Niaouli is an evergreen tree found in the US, but native to Australia. The niaouli tree has long leaves, around five-inches, with yellow-ish flowers that look like bottle brush at the ends. The flaky-looking trunk caused the tree to be called the paper bark tree, or bottle brush. Niaouli is related to tea tree, yet has a woody, sweet aroma. Niaouli is naturally stimulating because of eucalyptol and monoterpenes. It takes approximately 4.5 lbs of niaouli leaves to make 15 mL of essential oil. Historically used in cosmetics, lotions, and toothpastes, niaouli helps keep mouth and skin healthy and clean. Niaouli may help relax the body and emotions through massage.
Cautions
Use with a carrier for sensitive skin. Keep out of reach of children. Consult your physician if you are pregnant, nursing or under a doctor’s care. Do not put oils directly in your eyes (oils can drip into eyes – if this happens, flush with fractionated coconut oil, not water). Do not drip oils into the ear canal. Avoid sensitive areas.
